About Roots of Reggae

Roots of Reggae is a  movement that brings people of all ages together to celebrate reggae music and culture. By doing so we aim to honour the contribution of older pioneers and build mutual understanding across generations.

The idea for Roots of Reggae came from South London resident Francis Clarke. A long-time fan of reggae music, particularly 1970s dub, Francis was inspired to develop Roots of Reggae after reading David Katz’ Solid Foundation: An Oral History of Reggae and discovering that many of reggae’s pioneers were now living  in and around Brixton. Francis believes this generation of reggae pioneers deserves greater recognition and respect and has developed Roots of Reggae to do precisely that.

There are two main parts to Roots of Reggae:

1) An inclusive space for people of all ages to enjoy reggae music.

We believe more people should have the chance to enjoy reggae music in all its forms!  Roots of Reggae provides a friendly and inclusive space to highlight the musical achievements of pioneers across ska, rocksteady, reggae and  dub. We  aim to entertain people of all ages and introduce younger generations to some amazing music that continues to shape the music that is made today.

2) A chance for older pioneers to share their memories with younger music fans

We believe older pioneers deserve greater recognition and respect! Roots of Reggae encourages older pioneers to share their memories of reggae music and the role it has played in their lives. By bringing together people of all ages we aim to make younger generations aware of the contribution of older pioneers and build mutual understanding between generations.
